Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour

Set against a backdrop of historical fortress walls, Cugó Gran Maċina Grand Harbour is a luxury all-suite boutique hotel in Senglea, Malta.   The hotel’s opening in December 2017, followed the extensive renovation of one of Grand Harbour’s most famous landmarks: Sheer Bastion.

A member of Design Hotels™, Cugó Gran Maċina is located just five miles from Valletta, the European Capital of Culture 2018, and four miles from Malta International Airport.

The iconic Sheer Bastion structure was built in 1554 during the reign of Grand Master Claude de la Sengle. Cugó Gran Maċina Grand Harbour derives its name from the large sheer crane structure (macchina) used for centuries to welcome seafarers and to hoist the heavy masts and cargo. The renovation of the hotel forms a centerpiece of the Cottonera Regeneration Project that has also seen the transformation of the Vittoriosa waterfront which the hotel overlooks.

The award-winning design of Cugó Gran Maċina Grand Harbour juxtaposes the old with the new, and was overseen by Maltese architect Edwin Mintoff in conjunction with Milanese Interior Design firm Daaa Haus.

The stylish and comfortable 21 suites all offer unobstructed views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding marina. The suites feature large living rooms and bedrooms, Milano sofa beds, free-standing baths and walk-in showers. Impressive mezzanines float above custom crafted bathrooms and Tom Dixon and Flos & Louis Paulson light fixtures are used in the hotel lobby as well as some of the suites.

The two signature suites – the Macina Suite and the Presidential Suite – each have 130 square metres of living space, a bathtub with a view, and kitchenettes. The Presidential Suite also has a spectacular harbour terrace.

A rooftop pool offers breath-taking views of Vittoriosa and Cospicua, extending as far as Valletta.  Here, guests can take part in seasonal activities such as aqua gym, yoga and pilates. Exclusive appointments with personal trainers can also be arranged, as well as in-room spa treatments.

The 930 square metre rooftop terrace overlooking the Three Cities accommodates events for up to 1,000 guests, and is ideal for weddings, special events and corporate functions.

Hammett’s Macina is managed by renowned Maltese Chef and Restaurateur, Chris Hammett. The restaurant serves Maltese cuisine with an international twist, using the freshest, locally-sourced ingredients.

The hotel has a bar and café, and a boardroom for small conferences.

Aspen Chamber Resort Association

Aspen, Colorado is a world-class destination with outdoor adventures from skiing to biking, and a flair for arts and culture, all year round.

Though Aspen is largely touted in the UK for its adrenaline-pumping activities and natural beauty, its diverse cultural offerings are what make this mountain town so special; it really is akin to a modern-day ‘Arcadia’ and yet its spirit is firmly rooted in the Rockies.

Modern Aspen was born more than 60 years ago when Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke and his wife, Elizabeth, invited intellectuals, artists and philosophers to convene in Aspen for the fledgling Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. With lofty goals of promoting world peace and instilling humanism in the tense post-war nation and world, the festival was a success, and spawned a civic and cultural renaissance. From humble beginnings as a small mining town, entrepreneurs, athletes, idealists and environmentalists propelled Aspen to the world stage, one which continually draws leading talents from the fields of arts, culture, design, politics and sport. Aspen has never been one to shy away from pushing the boundaries.

Today, arts and culture thrive in the company of outdoor adventure and a close-knit, dynamic community, making Aspen a haven for the simultaneous nurturing of mind, body, and spirit, which together is called today “The Aspen Idea”. This idea continues drives the internal energy of Aspen.

2019 marks the 100th year anniversary of the Bauhaus, a modernist art school founded in Germany. Aspen will be commemorating the influence of Bauhaus on the city of Aspen with a series of calendar events to mark the centennial celebration and to honour Herbert Bayer, a Bauhaus master teacher of typography and design, who was invited by Walter Paepcke to move to Aspen in 1946 to help design Paepcke’s idea of a cultural utopia.

The bauhaus100:aspen celebration, themed ‘Our Legacy, Our Future/Work-Play-Create’, will feature lectures, educational outreach, parties, art-making, films, art exhibitions, festivities and more.

Spring 2019 also sees the opening of W Aspen and The Sky Residences at W Aspen. The new hotel and residences are being designed by Nemaworkshop in partnership with local firm Rowland + Broughton Architecture and W’s in-house design team, offering 88 guestrooms and 11 W-branded fractional residences. Conveniently located at the base of Aspen Mountain, the development will also feature a 12,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar and pool, which will be open to the public with expansive views of Aspen Mountain.
