A 19-metre cantilevered outdoor infinity pool. Two new floors crowned with an adults-only spa sanctuary. Eight exceptional suites with expansive living spaces opening onto mountain-view terraces.

Hotel Lürzerhof in Austria's Salzburger Land is investing over €10 million in a wellness transformation that pairs architectural daring with family vision - and it's one worth paying attention to.

The transformation is striking: two entirely new floors rising above the traditional Stammhaus, creating a contemporary crown that honours heritage while embracing bold, modern design. Salzburg's acclaimed Köck + Bachler - the interior architects behind emotionally resonant spaces across Austria, Bavaria, and South Tyrol for 25 years - have brought this vision to life.

The fourth floor introduces eight meticulously crafted accommodations ranging from 28m² luxury rooms to expansive 130m² suites. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame uninterrupted views of the Radstädter Tauern Mountains, while interiors showcase rich timber cladding, textured stone surfaces, brushed copper and bronze accents, and sculptural lighting that creates understated sophistication.

Select suites elevate the experience dramatically: private panorama saunas on south-facing terraces, outdoor jacuzzis with mountain views, dedicated fitness corners, and an exclusive private cinema. Family suites accommodate up to six guests with multiple bedrooms and dual bathrooms, while certain suites can be combined to create even more expansive retreats.

The Show-Stopping Fifth Floor

Here's where Lürzerhof's ambition becomes impossible to ignore. The entire top floor - approximately 900m² - is dedicated to adults-only wellness, conceived as a haven of tranquillity and architectural daring.

The centrepiece? A 19-metre cantilevered outdoor infinity pool that appears to float above the alpine landscape. Dramatically projecting beyond the building's footprint, this heated, year-round pool offers an almost gravity-defying experience where guests seem suspended between mountain peaks and valley floor. Surrounded by glass balustrades preserving uninterrupted panoramas, it's destined to become one of Austria's most photographed wellness experiences.

At the heart of this wellness floor sits a striking glass atrium - an architectural pause drawing natural light deep into the space while showcasing living alpine botanicals beneath a circular skylight. It's a meditative focal point visible from elegant relaxation lounges surrounding it.

The wellness journey continues through carefully curated heat experiences: Finnish Panorama Sauna and Organic Panorama Sauna (both offering sweeping mountain vistas), an Infrared Salt Dome, and Aroma Steam Bath designed for deep therapeutic relaxation. Two beautifully appointed Panorama Relaxation Rooms provide tranquil retreats with floor-to-ceiling mountain views, while an intimate Tea Lounge invites quiet contemplation.

Sculptural design elements throughout - organic pendant lighting and bespoke metalwork - create an environment that feels as much gallery as spa.

Spa Reception Transformation

The expansion extends to a complete reimagining of the existing ground-floor spa reception. The new design introduces a generous, light-filled arrival experience with an expanded wellness reception and intimate lounge. Spacious changing areas with secure lockers offer early check-in or late check-out flexibility, allowing guests to maximize wellness time even on arrival and departure days.

Two beautifully appointed massage rooms provide sanctuaries for personalised treatments, while signature design features - timber slatted screens, curved spa reception desks in natural stone and wood, and dramatic copper-toned archways - create sophisticated arrival moments.

Sustainable Luxury That Delivers

The transformation aligns with the Habersatter family's commitment to sustainable luxury. As a fully climate-positive resort generating more than ten times its own energy needs through on-site hydroelectric power, Lürzerhof proves environmental responsibility and exceptional hospitality can thrive together. The new floors incorporate green roofs, energy-efficient glazing, and materials sourced with minimal environmental impact.

"This expansion is about more than adding space - it's about elevating the entire wellness experience at Lürzerhof and making an architectural statement that reflects our ambition," says Harald Habersatter. "We wanted to create something that feels both rooted in our alpine landscape and unmistakably contemporary. The cantilevered pool embodies this vision: it's bold, beautiful, and offers an experience you simply cannot find elsewhere in the region."

Why This Matters for 2026

To complete this ambitious project, Hotel Lürzerhof will close from April through July 2026, reopening at the end of July with its expanded offering. The timing positions this as one of the year's most significant Alpine hospitality launches - offering media a fresh angle in a region where genuine innovation can be rare.

The resort is currently accepting bookings for summer 2026 and beyond, when guests will be among the first to experience this bold new chapter in alpine wellness. Following completion, the resort will feature 68 rooms and suites across its signature Stammhaus and exclusive Alpin Lodge, with an expanded 4,500m² Premium Spa including seven pools, multiple saunas, steam rooms, and dedicated relaxation zones.

This isn't simply refurbishment - it's a family staking their vision on the future of alpine wellness at a time when many traditional mountain hotels are struggling to remain relevant. The cantilevered infinity pool alone provides striking visual content, while the broader story touches on themes editors care about: sustainable luxury, architectural innovation, family legacy, and the evolution of wellness tourism.

For anyone tracking fresh alpine stories beyond the usual suspects - particularly those interested in independent properties pushing architectural boundaries while maintaining environmental leadership - Lürzerhof's transformation represents a compelling narrative about the future of mountain hospitality. With the July 2026 reopening, this is a story worth watching as it unfolds.
